The fact that I love chocolates in all forms makes me a chocoholic. However, I have an aversion with the run of the mill variety (you know those brands), especially those that are loaded with sugar, so much so that you can no longer taste the cacao flavor. As we all know, chocolates are made from cacao beans – not sugar.
Having said that, I also love to have a cup of hot chocolate drink every once in a while, even in the middle of summer. I’ve tried quite a few, from the instant kind to the ones that you boil and simmer. I guess, it’s a matter of preference. For me, convenience should not sacrifice the taste and texture, so even if the instant variety makes for a quick drink, I never used to fall for it until Keurig came into my life one year ago. That distinct chocolate taste should be there.
Whenever I get the chance, I always grab Tablea. Very recently, I was given a bag of fresh Tableas from the Philippines. Tablea in Filipino cuisine refers to blocks of cacao heated with milk to make hot chocolate drink. Whenever I have it, it reminds me of my childhood. Clearly, it’s the tablea’s fat content that makes the big difference from all cocoa drinks that I have tried.
Starbucks Hot Cocoa, while it is a good replacement, does not really appeal to my taste. Something is ‘missing.’
Jacques Torres’s Hot Chocolate is awesome!
LIC Market’s Cocoa Powder is ‘just okay’ for my taste.
Cafe Escapes Dark Chocolate is a great substitute to Tablea. The taste is perfect, and it is the most convenient among all the varieties I listed. With the Keurig brewer, I get my cup of hot chocolate drink in a minute, as compared with all of the other varieties that require me to boil and simmer.
So, which among these drinks can’t I live without?
Just give me my Tablea and Jacques Torres and I’m a happy camper. However, because of convenience with Cafe Escapes, I’ve been happy with it and been drinking more of it lately. Remember, it’s summer, and who would want to heat up the kitchen at this time?
