Florida Colleges are ‘magnets’ to most kids from New York who are going to college. Why is this so? The location! I should know, I witnessed the arduous ‘going to college’ process/task that my sister had to go through with her two college kids. There were a lot of normal discussions, but there were more of those heated arguments because of the preferences of the children.
Truth be told, if you ask any New Yorker, Florida’s weather is such a novelty. Thus, many kids who are aspiring to go to college find it very enticing with the promise of sunshine and warm weather year round. Don’t even ask me about my stand on this, because I will be quick to agree. I’m not sure though how I will take the move if it was my kids who are moving there to attend college and I’m left behind.
None of my sister’s children prevailed, but even if the eldest has already earned her degree in Physical Therapy, my sister is again facing another wave of school selection process, this time, for her daughters’ masters degree. As expected, she wants to attend a school somewhere out of state. My sister is admittedly losing her battle at this point.
Kids will not always be kids. They grow up and become responsible adults and they know what they want. Armed with strong educational background, they are well prepared to conquer the world on their own. The many parents who are like my sister and are afraid to let go of their children should learn to acknowledge that these kids after gaining their necessary education, are more than ready to spread their wings and face their own battles.
