Strike three…. No, it’s not a home run.
Our taste buds at the onset of Spring didn’t change. We were hoping that now, when the cold temps have long been gone, somehow our verdict about Villabate Alba Pasticceria improves.
Writing about it after our first try would have been too drastic, so my husband and I decided to try it two more times to give the pastry shop a fair chance. Driving all the way to the pastry shop was not that bad. There’s ample metered street parking. The three times that we were there, there was always a long queue of people. With the queue of people buying gelato out of the way (they are separated), waiting in line was not that bad at all.
What is bad then? The sugar laden cakes and cookies. The only good thing that we’ve tried was the croissant. With the steep prices, we had higher expectations. When we went there in the Spring, we opted to buy several cake slices so we have ample sampling of what they are offering. We did just that this summer plus a sampling of their cookies. While the cakes and cookies suggested that they have some kind of chocolate ingredient because of the color, you simply don’t get a taste of any trace of chocolate at all. Sugar, is more like it, as they are overwhelmingly sweet.
This is a typical “all form no substance” kind of place. Cake designs are awesome, the display of decadent treats on the shelves are to die for. Too bad, they don’t allow any person to take pictures and videos. The rule is prominently posted upon entry of the shop.
We’ve had enough for us to declare that we’re not going back. The bakery is simply overrated.
