The steep wooded slopes of Glendalough (glen-da-lock) or the valley of the two lakes is located at the south end of Wicklow’s military road. It is where Ireland’s most impressive monastic settlement is found.
The Monastic Village is the best ruins of Glendalough. This 110 foot tall round tower is the focal point. I learned that towers like this were standard features in settlements during those times and functions as bell towers, storage lofts, beacon for pilgrims and last resort refuges during Viking raids.
This place is where I started my miles and miles of walking. It was tiring but I learned a lot. Stay tuned for the continuation.
