Though tired from the trip, we got up early to be at St. Peter’s Square. It was such a nice day, I was very enthusiastic and as if I was going to get the best gift ever, I felt that I was bouncing and couldn’t wait to get there.
I was rather surprised to see a mammoth crowd. Getting in through the metal detector was a breeze. The celebration started at 10:40 a.m. As expected, the proceeding was in different languages. Before the Pope even came out, the people in attendance was acknowledged. We were shocked to hear our names mentioned loud and clear. We were two of the few that were really mentioned by name, as most of those that were in attendance came in groups and most likely had their tickets through a tour company.
It was such a moving experience, as the Pope passed by where we were seated. The sun shone so bright that morning but it didn’t deter anyone from being out there. Hearing and seeing the Pope in person was the highlight of our Rome itinerary.
